FAMILY HISTORY DVD

I have created a family genealogy DVD that I freely distribute to family members. The DVD runs on IBM compatible PCs and is continuously updated as I receive new information from family members or researchers. The DVD contains an enormous number of both old and current photos of family members as well as many stories about the family history and of the achievements of individuals.

If you will send me your mailing address, I will be happy to send you a free DVD for your PC compatible computer with the McEachron / MacEachron / McEchron / McEathron genealogy. The DVD contains much more information than is available on the web sites. If your computer will not handle DVDs (unlikely unless your computer is old enough to be running Windows 98 First Edition or older), let me know and I will send the data on two CDs. Also, if you have Family Tree Maker, let me know which version and I will create the file in your version (otherwise I will send Version #6 with a free "View Only" version of Family Tree Maker - the current version is 2011 (#19)).

NOTE: I have recently made updates that allow the program to work on the new Windows Vista or Windows 7 as well as older versions. If you have an older version that doesn't work on your new computer, contact me and I will send you the updatedDVD>

The DVD contains family photos for as many generations as possible. If you have any photos you would like preserved in the family history for our future descendants, please send them to me and they will be included. I particularly like to have wedding, family groups and general interest photos

If you digitize the photos and send them via E-mail, please select a resolution that will produce a file of about 300KB to 500KB (200 pixels per inch for a 4" x 6" photo and higher for a smaller photo). Smaller files will look good on your computer screen but the larger files will make good photos if future generations wish to make prints. If you cannot scan photos, you can mail photos to me and I will scan them and send them back to you. In many cases, I can do a good job of restoring damaged or aged photos.

FAMILY HISTORY

Donald McEachron (born MacEachern) of the Isle of Islay, Scotland, married Anna McDonald (b MacDonald) and both sailed, with daughter Catharine, on the first ship of the Captain Lauchlin Campbell party, July 1738, forNew York City. Donald was apparently dead in 1763 but his widow was living in 1774. They settled on the Kakiate Patent, Orange County, New York. They had two additional daughters (Florence and Flora). They had three sons (John, Cornelius, and Peter) who had 24 children between them. One of the 24 grandchildren, Daniel McEachron (3rd generation) changed the spelling to McEathron. We believe that all McEathrons are his descendants. Several other descendants changed their spelling to McEchron and MacEachron (in two cases "to avoid being mistaken for Irish").

Thanks to the work of Ellsworth D. McEathron in 1941 and William McEachron, Kay Getting, Mabel Walbruch, Dianne Gordon, Stan McEathron, Karl MacEachron and many others in recent years, we have traced many of their descendants.

The following discussion of Scottish history is taken from the document on the McEathron genealogy published by Ellsworth McEathron in October 1941.

In ancient Scotland, land was held under the law of gavel. That is, land was not owned by individuals but portioned out according to need in a sort of life or family tenure. Rule was by the law of tanistry. By this law, the member of a ruling family who was considered the fittest was chosen as the chief. The king was elected by the seven great Mormaors, or leaders of the seven great provinces. While the clan system did not reach its stride until the 13th century, it obtained its start in the llth century as a defense against the efforts of King' Malcolm Ceann-mor to impose the feudal system upon the highlands, in violation of his oath. The Clan system was finally overthrown by the Battle of Culloden in 1745.

In the second century, Ptolemy classed the Dicaledones Cruthne or Northern Picts as being of thirteen tribes. Of these, the Kaledonioi occupied the Mormaorship of Gallgael. The Kaledonioi consisted of five great clans; Siol Cuinn (Race of Cuinn), Siol Gillevray, Siol Eachern, Clan Donnachic and Clan Pharlane. Siol Cuinn split into several clans one of which was McDonald Clan Donald North and South. Siol Eachern split; one group becoming Campbells of Craignish and one group retained the name MacEachern, becoming a sept of Clan Donald South. The Chief of Clan Donald North and South was Lord of the Isles, being finally overthrown and in 1493 the lands forfeited by the Crown. James VI of Scotland (James I of England) sold the Isle of Islay, the heart of Clan Donald South, to the Campbells of Argyle. This is the manner in which the Campbell immigrants of 1738, 39 & 40 came under the sway of Clan Campbell altho probably but few had actually any Campbell blood. This is probably the reason for the migration – having changed from holders of land by gavel to the position of tenants. However, the flood of Scotch migration did not start until after the rising of 1745 and the disastrous Battle of Culloden, followed by the heartless massacres. The MacDonalds of Glencoo were part of Siol Cuinn.

In 1737, Captain Laughlin Campbell came to New York, was made promises and returned to Islay, sold his estates and financed the migrations 1738, 39 and 40. The story has been told in many works and will not be repeated here. From a petition of 1763, also signed by the sons of Laughlin Campbell, found in the N.Y. Land Papers Vol. XVI, page 154, we find "that the Government of this Province never treated the said Captain Campbel's fellow immigrants as Dependents on him but as Principals in the then intended Settlement - - - - - - - those whom they are pleased to Call their Associates", Whatever the financial setup of the Campbell Associates was, it was faulty. The lands were not forthcoming until 1764 and prior to that date they settled in dire poverty, mostly on Kakiate Patent in the Highlands of New York, where most of the first generation born in America were born.

It is of interest to note, that only three, none of them McEachrons, made their "mark" on the petition of 1763. For that day, that was remarkable.

Many of the Campbell Associates were related by blood or marriage, or so became shortly after arrival. The MacEacherns who arrived were as follows:

Donald, his wife Anna McDonald, and their daughter Catharine, (1738)

Archibald, his wife Jean McDonald, their daughter Catharine, (1738).

Patric and wife Mary McQuarry (1739);

Angus, not one of the Associates but, as argued above, probably arrived 1740-1741.

Mary wife of Donald McMillen. (1738)

Florence wife of Charles McKellar. (1738)

Flory wife of Archibald McCollum. (1740)

Anna McDonald had two sisters as fellow immigrants: Mary wife of Alexander McNaughton and Jean wife of Archibald McEachern. Donald and Archibald McEachern are believed to have been brothers. Also, note that the names of their first born were the same. Finlay was a cousin of Archibald, probably of both. In passing, it should be noted that the wife of a Scotsman did not lose her identity as did the wife of the early English immigrant.
